NankaiUniversitywasfoundedbyZhangBolingandYanXiu.OnFebruary10,1919,NankaiSchoolheldanopeningceremony;September7and8,NankaiUniversityenrollmentexamination.OnSeptember25th,NankaiUniversityheldanopeningceremonywiththreesubjectsofliberalarts,sciences,andbusiness.

Intheautumnof1920,NankaiUniversitywasaprecedentformaleandfemalestudentsinthesameschool.In1921,theminingdepartmentwasadded(stoppedin1926).InMarch1922,theschoolleasedatotalofmorethan400acresinthetwosectionsoftheSouthCommonsintheNorthVillageofBalitaiVillagetobuildteachingbuildings,dormitoriesforboysandgirls,andresidencesforteachers.

InJune1923,aftertheschool’sXiushanHall,thefirstandsecondmaledormitories,femaleandfacultyresidenceswereallcompleted,thebronzestatueofLiXiushanwascommemorated.TheRockefellerFoundationoftheUnitedStatesdonatedthebuildingandTheequipmentcostis125,000yuan,andYuanShuzhifromHenandonated70,000yuantostarttheconstructionofthesciencemuseum.InAugust,NankaiUniversityofficiallymovedtothenewcampusofBalitai.Inadditiontothefourmajorsofliberalarts,sciences,business,andmining,theschoolhasaddedpreparatorycourses,andNankaiUniversityhasbeguntotakeshape.

From1927to1937,NankaiUniversityhasmadegreatprogressinallaspects.In1927,theSocialEconomicResearchCommittee(laterrenamedtheEconomicResearchInstitute)andtheManmengResearchAssociation(laterrenamedtheNortheastResearchAssociation)wereestablished.LuMuzhaidonated100,000yuanandbegantobuildthe"MuzhaiLibrary."In1928,postgraduateeducationbegan.In1929,thedepartmentwaschangedtoacollege,withatotalof13departments,includingliberalarts,sciences,businessschools,andpre-medicalsciences.

In1930,inaccordancewiththeregulationsoftheMinistryofEducationoftheNationalGovernment,theoriginalthreesubjectsofscienceandbusinesswerechangedtotheCollegeofLiberalArts,theCollegeofScience,andtheCollegeofBusiness.Atthesametime,theDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringwasaddedtotheFacultyofScience,andtheDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringandtheInstituteofAppliedChemistrywereestablishedinthefollowingtwoyears.BytheeveoftheWarofResistanceAgainstJapan,NankaiUniversityhadbecomeaninstitutionofhigherlearningwith3colleges,12departments,and2researchinstitutes,with429studentsandmorethan110facultymembers.

In1931,theBusinessSchoolmergedwiththeEconomicsDepartmentoftheFacultyofArtsandtheSocialEconomicResearchCommitteetoformtheSchoolofEconomics;establishedtheDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringandtheDepartmentofElectricalEngineering,whichwereaffiliatedwiththeCollegeofScience,andChenZhiqindonatedfundstobuildtheNankaiGirls’Dormitory"Zhiqin"Duringthisperiod,thescaleofrunningtheschoolhasbeengreatlydeveloped,andtheequipmenthasbecomemorecomplete;in1932,theInstituteofAppliedChemistrywasestablished.

IntheearlydaysofNankaiUniversity,asaprivateuniversity,itsfundingbasicallyreliedonfundgroupsandprivatedonations,exceptforasmallamountofgovernmentsubsidies,tuitionfeesandschoolincome.Theschoolisrelativelysmall.In1937,therewereonly429students,buttheteachingstaffwasrelativelystrong.

InJuly1937,NankaiUniversitywasbombedbytheJapanesearmyandtwo-thirdsofitsschoolbuildingsweredestroyed;inAugust,NankaiUniversity,PekingUniversityandTsinghuaUniversityformedtheNationalChangshaProvisionalUniversity,thepresidentsofthethreeuniversitiesZhangBoling,JiangMenglin,andMeiYiqiarethestandingcommitteemembers,whoareinchargeofschoolaffairs.InAprilofthefollowingyear,ChangshaProvisionalUniversitymovedtoKunmingandwasrenamedNationalSouthwestAssociatedUniversity.

In1939,theNankaiInstituteofEconomicsmovedtoChongqingNankaiMiddleSchooltocontinueitsresearchworkandrecruitgraduatestudents.InJuly1942,Nankaiestablishedthe"FrontierHumanitiesResearchOffice"inKunmingandpublishedthejournal"FrontierHumanities".

DuringtheperiodofNationalNankaiUniversity

AfterthevictoryoftheAnti-JapaneseWar,thethreeschoolsweredemobilizedandreturnedtothenorth.In1946,NankaiUniversitymovedbacktoTianjinandwasrenamedasNational.Aftertheresumptionoftheschool,therewillbe16departments,includingtheCollegeofArts,Science,PoliticalEconomy,andEngineering,aswellastheInstituteofEconomics,theInstituteofAppliedChemistry,andtheFrontierHumanitiesResearchOffice.

In1948,theUniversityofOxfordsentalettertotheMinistryofEducationoftheNationalGovernment,confirmingthatsevenChineseuniversitiesincludingtheprivateNankaiUniversityhadgraduateswithanaveragescoreof80ormoreforBachelorofArtsandSciences,andtheyenjoyedthestatusof"OxfordSeniorStudent"".

InJanuary1949,TianjinwasliberatedandNankaiUniversitybegananewcourse.TheCommunistPartyofChinaandtheChinesegovernmentareveryconcernedaboutthedevelopmentofNankaiUniversity.PremierZhouEnlaivisitedhisalmamaterthreetimesin1951,1957and1959;ChairmanMaoZedongvisitedtheschoolinMay1958;InOctober1994,GeneralSecretaryJiangZemininspectedNankai;CentralleaderssuchasLiPengandZhuRongjihavealsoinspectedNankaisuccessively.

In1952,thedepartmentsofcollegesanduniversitiesnationwidewereadjusted,andtheSchoolofEngineeringofNankaiUniversitywasmergedintoTianjinUniversity,with14departmentsand3specialties.In1958,thedepartmentsoftrade,businessmanagement,accounting,finance,finance,andstatisticsofNankaiUniversityweretransferredtothenewlyestablishedTianjinUniversityofFinanceandEconomics.

In1960,theDepartmentofGeologyandGeography(discontinuedin1961),theSecondDepartmentofPhysics(transferredtoLanzhouUniversityin1961)andphilosophywereestablishedTie.Beforethe1980s,theestablishmentofninedepartmentswasstagnatedforalongtime,namely,mathematics,physics,biology,chemistry,Chinese,foreignlanguages,philosophy,politicaleconomy,historyandotherdepartments.From1966to1976,thenormalteachingorderofNankaiUniversitywasdisrupted.In1971,teachingandresearchworkwascompletelyparalyzed,andnostudentsorclasseswereenrolledforfiveyears.From1966toJuly1976,theTangshanEarthquakeaffectedTianjin,andmostoftheschoolbuildingsweredamagedtovaryingdegrees.

Since1980,NankaiUniversityhasestablishedanumberofnewmajorsandresearchinstitutionsinordertomeettheneedsofsocialistmodernizationandtakeadvantageofthegoodfoundationoftheoldmajors.Theliberalartsfocusedonaddingappliedmajorsfocusingonfinanceandeconomics,andonthisbasis,theSchoolofEconomicswasrestoredin1983,andthesciencesfocusedonaddingcross-cutting,fringe,andinformationhigh-techmajors.Inthemid-to-late1980s,NankaiUniversitydevelopedintoacomprehensiveuniversitywithmultipledisciplinesincludingnaturalsciences,technicalsciences,lifesciences,managementsciences,andarts.

In1981,entrustedandfundedbytheNationalTourismAdministration,NankaiUniversityestablishedtheDepartmentofTourismForeignLanguagesundertheDepartmentofHistory.Itisthefirstuniversitytoofferhighereducationintourismamongthesexuniversities.

OnNovember26,1981,NankaiUniversitywasapprovedbytheStateCouncilasthefirstbatchofdoctoralandmaster'sdegreegrantingunitsinthecountry.

In1984,NankaiUniversitybecameoneofthefirst22universitiesinthecountrytoestablishagraduateschool.

In1988,theStateEducationCommissionconductedtheselectionofthefirstbatchofkeydisciplinesfordoctoralprogramsincollegesanduniversities.NankaiUniversityhad11firstbatchofnationalkeydisciplines,rankingseventhamonguniversities.

In1994,theMinistryofForeignTradeandEconomicCooperation(nowtheMinistryofCommerce)directlyundertheTianjinInstituteofForeignTrade(atthedepartmentlevel)mergedintoNankaiUniversity.

InDecember1995,NankaiUniversitybecameoneofthefirst15universitiestobeincludedinthekeyconstructionofthenational"211Project".

In1999,theschoolwasselectedasthefirstbatchofnationaluniversitystudentculturalqualityeducationbases.

OnDecember25,2000,theMinistryofEducationandtheTianjinMunicipalPeople'sGovernmentsignedanagreementonkeyjointconstructionofNankaiUniversity,andNankaiUniversityenteredthefirstbatchofnational"985Project"keyconstructionranks.

In2001,theschoolwasthefirstbatchtobeapprovedtorunanationaldemonstrationsoftwareacademy.

In2006,theschoolwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchof"111Plan"subjectinnovationandintelligenceintroductionbases.

In2007,NankaiUniversityandtheGeneralHospitaloftheChinesePeople’sLiberationArmysignedastrategiccooperationagreementtoimplementcomprehensivejointeducation.

In2009,theOrganizationDepartmentoftheCentralCommitteeandtheMinistryofEducationjointlyissuedadocumenttoidentify13universitiesincludingNankaiUniversityasthefirstbatchofnationaluniversitybasesforcadreeducationandtraining.

InMarch2010,theMinistryofEducationandtheTianjinMunicipalPeople'sGovernmentsignedanagreementtocontinuetofocusonthejointconstructionofNankaiUniversitytopreparefortheconstructionoftheJinnancampusofNankaiUniversity.OnMay14,theNationalTourismAdministration(nowtheMinistryofCultureandTourism)directlyundertheChinaTourismManagementAcademy(atthedepartmentlevel)reorganizationsystemwastransferredtoNankaiUniversity,andNankaiUniversity'sSchoolofTourismandServicewasestablished.

InNovember2012,theschoolwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchofnationaleducationtrainingbasesforoutstandinglegaltalents.

In2013,theTianjinChemicalandChemicalIndustryCollaborativeInnovationCenterwasrecognizedbytheMinistryofEducation,andtheschoolwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchof"2011Plan"bytheMinistryofEducation,andwasselectedasa"NationalGraduateEmploymentExperienceUniversity"bytheMinistryofEducation.ThedemonstrationbaseforstudyinginChinawasidentifiedasthefirstbatchofsocialworkprofessionaltalenttrainingbasesoftheMinistryofCivilAffairs.

InDecember2014,theNankaiUniversity-UniversityofGlasgowJointGraduateSchoolwasapprovedforestablishment.

InJuly2015,theSchoolofMaterialsScienceandEngineeringandtheNationalInstituteofNewMaterialsofNankaiUniversitywereinaugurated.InAugust,NankaiUniversitywasselectedasthefirstbatchof"NationalCollegesandUniversitiesPracticeEducation,InnovationandEntrepreneurshipBase".InSeptember,theJinnancampusofNankaiUniversitywascompletedandputintouse,whichinitiallyformedthe“onecampus,threedistricts”runningstructureofBalitaicampus,Jinnancampus,andTEDACollege.

In2016,thereorganizationsystemofTianjinFourthHospitalwastransferredtoNankaiUniversityandbecameadirectlyaffiliatedhospitalofNankaiUniversity.OnAugust3ofthesameyear,theNankaiUniversityAffiliatedHospitalwasinauguratedandestablishedatNo.4WeishanRoad,HexiDistrict(formerlyTianjinFourthHospital).

InSeptember2017,NankaiUniversitywasselectedasoneofthe36universitiesinthe“DoubleFirstClass”constructionuniversitylist.OnOctober16,NankaiUniversityMedicalAllianceStrategicDevelopmentForumandStrategicCooperationSigningCeremonywasheld.NankaiUniversitysignedcooperationagreementswith12hospitals.

InJanuary2018,NankaiUniversitywasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchofSino-USYouthMakerExchangeCenterslistedbytheMinistryofEducation.InMarch,itwasselectedasthefirstbatchofnewengineeringresearchandpracticeprojectsbytheMinistryofEducation.InMay,NankaiUniversityestablishedtheSchoolofArtificialIntelligence,theSchoolofCyberspaceSecurity,andtheSchoolofStatisticsandDataScience.InNovember,itwasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchofChineseexcellenttraditionalcultureinheritancebasesbytheMinistryofEducation.

InJanuary2019,theBalitaicampusofNankaiUniversitywasnamedamunicipalpatriotismeducationbasebytheTianjinMunicipalPartyCommitteeandMunicipalGovernment.OnJanuary17,GeneralSecretaryXiJinpinginspectedNankaiUniversity.InAugust,itwasawardedthe2019NationalInnovationandEntrepreneurshipTypicalExperienceUniversity.InSeptember,theschoolbecameafoundingmemberandgoverningunitoftheChinaArtificialIntelligenceEducationAssociation.InOctober,theNankaiUniversity-OxfordUniversityJointResearchInstitutewasinaugurated.

InMay2020,theInstituteofPublicHealthandHealthofNankaiUniversitywasestablished.OnAugust27,theTranslationalMedicineResearchInstituteoftheAffiliatedPeople'sHospitalofNankaiUniversitywasestablished.OnSeptember17,2020,itwasrecognizedbytheMinistryofEducationasabasefortheinheritanceofChineseexcellenttraditionalcultureingeneralcollegesanduniversitiesnationwidein2020.InDecember,itwasincludedinthethirdbatchofnationaldefenseeducationschoolsbytheMinistryofEducation.InOctober,the"NationalAncientBookRestorationSkillsCenterNankaiUniversityTransmissionCenter"wasestablished.InOctober,theestablishmentofanalliancefortheintegrationofideological,political,andeducationamonglarge,medium,andsmallchildren.InDecember,theInstituteofTransplantationMedicineofNankaiUniversityandtheInstituteofObstetricsandGynecologyofNankaiUniversitywereofficiallyinaugurated,andwereawardedtheSpecialAwardforthePromotionofUnpaidBloodDonationbytheNationalHealthCommission.

OnJanuary24,2021,thefirstbatchtojointheChinaPilotFreeTradeZoneResearchInstituteAlliance.OnMay9,theNewStructuralEconomicsResearchCenterofNankaiUniversitywasestablished.InMay,theclinicalmedicinemajorofNankaiUniversitywascertifiedbytheMinistryofEducation,andthecertificationisvalidfor6years.

2017年度，南开大学SCI收录论文1392篇，全国高校排名48位；EI收录论文数817篇，全国高校排名第59位；CSSCI来源期刊论文1297篇；SSCI收录论文39篇。2007-2017年，南开大学SCI论文累计被引用篇数12564篇，累计被引用次数210847次，被引用次数在全国高校中排名第15位，篇均被引用次数16.78次，在全国累计被引用次数较多的高校中位居第一。

在自然科学方面，学校SCI论文数量居全国高校前列，其中在有机化学、农药化学、基础数学、应用数学和光学等领域的部分研究成果都已达到国际先进水平，薄膜光电子等一批尖端高新技术的研究与开发为中国现代化建设作出了贡献。

馆藏资源

截至2019年9月，南开大学图书馆入藏图书固定资产总计390万册，其中普通图书283.8万册（中文图书233.5万册，外文图书20多个语种计50.3万册），中外文现刊41.4万册，电子图书61.8万册，电子期刊2.8万种，馆藏文献以经济、历史、数学、化学等学科最为系统丰富。

南开大学图书馆拥有珍贵的古籍线装书近30万册，是国家重点古籍保护单位，有善本书约22000余册，2000余种，内有宋元刻本24部，明刻本640余部，清初精刻本900余部，明清抄本近300部，手稿本72部，写本及韩、和刻本40余部。特藏文献包括外文珍本图书，大量价值珍贵的图、画精品，有明清时代的石印、铜版印及手绘各类地图，总计400种，3200余册；古籍部还藏有1949年以前期刊3000余种，9000余册；有电子文献51.4余万册，可访问的中外文数据库系统96个，子库306个。

《南开学报》（哲学社会科学版）为教育部名刊工程，首批入选学报和国家社科基金资助期刊，被中国社会科学研究评价中心主办的“中文社会科学引文索引（CSSCI）”等多种数据库作为索引刊物，多次荣获“全国双十佳社科学报”，“全国优秀名刊学报”等称号，被国家新闻出版署列入“全国期刊方阵双效期刊”，2004年获国家期刊奖提名奖。

《南开大学学报》（自然科学版）在《中文核心期刊要目总览》中被列为“自然科学综合类核心期刊”，被国家新闻出版署列入“中国期刊方阵·双效期刊”，本刊还被多种数据库作为入编和索引刊物。

《高等学校化学学报》由吉林大学、南开大学主办，设有学术论文、研究快报、综合评述等栏目，被《中国化学化工文摘》、《中国科学引文数据库》、美国《化学文摘》和俄罗斯《文摘杂志》等20多种中国国内外检索刊物和文献数据库摘引和收录，连续多次荣获全国、国家教育部和吉林省的优秀科技期刊奖和十佳期刊称号。

合作交流

截至2020年12月，学校与320多所国际知名大学和国际学术机构建立了合作与交流关系，承建了美国马里兰大学孔子学院等9所海外孔子学院，2012年、2015年两次获评“孔子学院先进中方合作院校”；学校承担了国家汉语对外教育培训任务，推出了牛津/剑桥暑期项目等海外学习项目。学校与世界经济论坛（达沃斯论坛）、全球大学领导者论坛（GULF）、国际公立大学论坛（IFPU）、国际公立大学联盟（IAU）、欧洲大学宪章、联合国秘书长科学咨询委员会（UNESCO-SAB）、电子电器工程师协会（IEEE）等国际组织保持着密切联系。

学校标识

校名

学校中文校名标识采用毛泽东主席1950年手书“南开大学”字体。

1904年8月，严修、张伯苓东渡日本考察教育归国后，将严氏家馆和王益孙家馆合并，招收新生，于1904年10月17日正式成立中学。校舍在严宅偏院，初称“私立中学堂”，后易名“敬业中学堂”、“私立第一中学堂”。此后得郑菊如捐城西南“南开洼”地10亩，起建校舍。该地位于天津城西南的开洼地带，有“南开洼”之称，简称“南开”。“南开”地名由此而来。1907年秋，由严宅迁入新校舍，学校因所在地名改称“南开中学堂”，后改称“私立南开学校”。

1950年，南开大学学生会给毛泽东写了一封信，希望为南开题写校名。毛泽东很快回信，并题写了好几幅“南开大学”，嘱托挑选一幅最满意的使用。经过挑选，最终确定了使用的这幅题名。

校徽

为纪念南开系列学校百年校庆，2004年10月17日南开大学启用了新的校徽。

南开大学校徽的核心图像为八角形，它既是南开大学校标的原始形态，也是其核心形态。八角星行由两个正方行叠加、结合而成，八个角皆为直角，分别指向东、西、南、北、东南、东北、西南、西北八个方向。一是体现“方方正正做人”之意，二是体现南开人“面向四面八方，胸怀博大，广纳新知，锐意进取”之精神。

八角星行方圆互动，融合东西，体现了南开大学“智圆行方”的入世哲学、“追求卓越”的立世哲学和“允公允能”的济世哲学。

校标中的“南开”二字凝练厚重，而孤形排列的“NANKAIUNIVERSITY”简约明快，表征了南开大学是一所历史悠久、面向世界的东方学府，图标下部以“1919”具体说明南开大学的创建时间。

学校徽章为毛泽东主席手书校名的长方形证章，本科生用徽章为白底青莲紫字，研究生用徽章为青莲紫底白字，教师用徽章为青莲紫底银字。

校色

在实际使用中，南开校色依明度可展开为10个色阶，不同色阶可作为标准色彩使用在不同明度的背景上，亦可作为背景色。

校旗

学校校旗为青莲紫色旗帜，中央印有白色字体的毛泽东主席手书校名。

校钟

在南开主楼后广场上，悬挂南开精神的象征——校钟。两边铜铸支架也呈钟型，支架上架一横梁，校钟悬挂其上，学校每逢新生入学和毕业生离校都会鸣钟纪念。

校钟系德国克虏伯工厂制造，铜钟钟面铸有整部《金刚经》，重达一万三千余斤。1904年，八国联军侵入天津，英军将该钟取走作日常用钟，八国联军向天津交还政权后，大钟移至海光寺，后海光寺赠与南开大学作为校钟。铜钟置于思源堂西侧，以4根弓形梁柱做支架，并悬挂于约2米高的台基之上。

1937年7月28日，日军进攻天津，南开建筑被毁，大钟亦不知所终。战后学校多方查索校钟，但杳无无音。1997年7月，学校决定重铸校钟，由王钟泉设计，江苏冶金机械厂铸造。新南开校钟重达3000公斤，钟高1.937米。钟的周边雕刻着60枚校徽图案，意寓60周年，钟正面是“南开”两个大字。钟上文字由书法家康殷书写，左面是校歌，中间是校训。

吉祥物

南开大学的吉祥物为南小开。南开大学始建于1919己未羊年，以羊为吉祥物可彰显南开校史悠长。在中华文化中羊常有踏实肯干、温和乐群、长于开拓之高风，恰与南开“允公允能”相协相映，而山羊取义于八音之首羯鼓，有礼乐和谐之意，在西方文化中羊亦是象征纯洁的图腾。山羊“小开”也表达了南开师生能够齐心协力，锐意创新，争做学界“领头羊”的美好期待。

精神文化

校训

允公允能，日新月异

“允公允能，日新月异”的校训，表达了南开人的价值取向和精神品质。

在南开初创之时，校父严修便提出了“尚公”、“尚能”的主张，1934年，校长张伯苓化《诗经·鲁颂》中“允文允武”为“允公允能”作为南开校训。“允”为文言语首助词，“既、又”的意思。

“允公允能”意即“既有公德，又有能力”，以培养学生“爱国爱群之公德，与服务社会之能力”。

“日新月异”语本《礼记·大学》：“汤之盘铭曰：‘苟日新，日日新，又日新。’”意即与时俱进，每天每月都要有所创新和发展。

南开校训作为一种永久的精神力量、博大的精神力量、强烈的感召力量，启迪陶冶了一代又一代的南开人，鼓舞他们为民族的振兴和社会的发展贡献力量。

校训中文标准字体源自1962年4月吴玉如为张伯苓校长夫妇合葬墓碑撰写的碑文拓片，后加以标准化处理。

校歌

为巩固团体精神，南开在五四运动前创制了南开大学校歌，编校歌的动议，是1917年5月16日在东京南开同学会欢迎当时赴日本参加远东运动会的张伯苓校长和南开运动员茶话会上，由留日南开学生张蓬仙提出。

1918年末，张伯苓从美国哥伦比亚大学留学回校后，即请音乐教员孙润生审定一歌，曲子采用的是西方的圣诞之歌——《OhChristmasTree》。

南开镜箴，又称四十字镜箴、容止格言，由南开体系创建人张伯苓订立的。

南开校友总会

1925年，校长张伯苓提出组织“出校同学会”以联络毕业同学，1929年10月南开校友总会正式成立。

南开校友总会的会员单位包括南开大学、天津市南开中学、天津市第二南开中学、重庆南开中学、自贡市蜀光中学、南开大学滨海学院、天津市南开翔宇学校、天津市兴南中学、重庆南开（融侨）中学九所系列学校。南开校友总会秘书处设在南开大学内。

2016年10月16日，南开大学校友周海冰、侯莹向母校捐款1亿元人民币，是南开大学建校以来收到的最大一笔单笔校友捐赠。

截至2018年5月，南开大学为“一校三区”形式，即“西有八里台校区，中有津南校区，东有泰达校区”这一互为依托，交相呼应的布局。

八里台校区

通讯地址：中国天津市南开区卫津路94号。南开大学八里台校区始建于1922年，1923年9月建成，南开大学从南开中学校园搬迁至此。2019年1月15日，南开大学八里台校区被天津市委、市政府命名为市级爱国主义教育基地。
